Gumloop makes it easier to create agents and tools in natural language, share an organization credit pool, publish artifacts, and put agents in Slack. n8n offers a broader technical canvas: visual workflows, code steps, 2,192 listed integrations, AI-agent nodes, a free self-hosted Community Edition, and paid governance tiers.

The catch is pricing. Gumloop credits, n8n workflow executions, n8n AI credits, and external model charges are different units. There is no honest one-line conversion between them. Model your own workload before buying.

Gumloop vs n8n: the quick verdict

Choose Gumloop if your main buyer is an operations, sales, support, or finance lead who wants to describe an agent, connect business tools, review its work, and deploy it without maintaining servers. Its strongest case is managed agentic work: research, triage, content transformation, document generation, conversational assistance, and multi-step tasks whose path may change from one run to the next.

Choose n8n if an automation engineer, developer, or technical operations lead will own the system. It is stronger for deterministic business processes, custom API work, code, custom nodes, version-controlled environments, and self-hosting. n8n also supports AI agents, so the choice is not “AI or no AI.” It is primarily a choice between a managed agent product and a workflow platform that can include agents.

For many companies, the right answer is both: n8n runs stable system-to-system processes while Gumloop handles judgment-heavy work and returns a structured result for review.

n8n's other current annual Business tiers are €9,852 for 50,000 monthly executions, €14,555 for 75,000, €17,260 for 100,000, €21,890 for 150,000, €26,390 for 200,000, €35,120 for 300,000, €43,810 for 400,000, and €52,450 for 500,000. Monthly billing is available at higher rates.

Gumloop Pro overage is $0.005 per credit. Its documented default cap is 1,000,000 overage credits per billing period—up to $5,000—although an owner can lower that cap. Gumloop Enterprise overage terms are custom. n8n says Business and Enterprise workflows continue after the included allowance; sales contacts the customer, and unresolved usage may be automatically invoiced after 45 days. The published Business overage is €4,000 per additional 300,000-execution block.

Trials are also different. Gumloop's 14-day Pro trial requires a card and becomes paid unless cancelled. n8n's Cloud trial does not require a card and currently includes Pro features, 1,000 executions, 5 concurrency, one project, 800 AI Assistant credits, 100 AI credits, and 20 AI Builder credits. n8n's Business trial is 14 days and requires a card.

Credits, executions, and AI costs are not interchangeable

Estimate each billing unit separately. A credit is not an execution, and neither necessarily includes an external model bill.

Gumloop charges variable credits for the work an agent performs. Its documentation values one credit at $0.005. Model use is converted to credits, successful tool calls have a one-credit base charge plus any tool-specific charge, compute costs five credits per session-minute with a one-credit minimum per response, and an 8% orchestration fee applies to those components. Pro includes 20,000 monthly credits: 7,400 at list value plus a 12,600 promotional bonus documented as part of the current plan.

Gumloop includes access to supported platform models, including current OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, and other options described in its model documentation. Pro and Enterprise customers can bring supported provider keys. With BYOK, chat-and-reasoning model usage costs zero Gumloop credits, but the orchestration fee rises from 8% to 16% and the model provider bills separately.

n8n charges one execution when a complete workflow runs, regardless of the number of steps or records processed inside that run. A webhook firing 2,000 times can therefore create about 2,000 executions, while a scheduled batch processing 2,000 records could be one execution if designed that way. n8n's AI Assistant credits are a separate in-product allowance for features such as workflow assistance; they reset monthly, do not roll over, and cannot currently be purchased separately. External model calls made by a workflow can create another bill with the chosen provider.

Three normalized SMB workload examples

  1. Daily finance digest: One scheduled n8n workflow per day is about 31 executions in a 31-day month, even if it processes many records. A Gumloop agent doing the same job consumes a variable mix of model, tool, compute, and orchestration credits. Sample ten representative days and use Gumloop's usage log; do not convert 31 executions into 31 credits.
  2. Lead intake and routing: If 2,000 form submissions each trigger one n8n workflow, budget about 2,000 executions, plus external model charges if AI enrichment is used. In Gumloop, measure credits per representative lead across short, long, successful, failed, and human-review cases, then multiply the observed range—not a single optimistic run.
  3. Support inbox agent: If 500 conversations average four inbound messages and every message starts an n8n workflow, that is roughly 2,000 executions before retries or sub-workflows. Gumloop meters agent interactions and variable work; its concurrency limit is not an included-volume allowance. Track credits per resolved conversation and the share escalated to a person.

Product fit: managed agents versus technical workflows

Gumloop starts with the agent. A user can describe an agent or tool in natural language, connect services, give it knowledge and instructions, and let it choose tools during a conversation or task. Agents can create versioned artifacts, run in Slack, call subagents, request human approval for sensitive tools, and draw from a shared organization credit pool. Pro supports 25 concurrent agent interactions organization-wide; Enterprise defaults to 100 and can negotiate more. A task can use up to 10 concurrent subagents, and those subagents count toward the organization limit.

n8n starts with a workflow graph. It lists 2,192 integrations on its current integrations page and supports HTTP requests, code, custom nodes, community nodes, webhooks, queues, sub-workflows, and AI Agent nodes. That makes n8n useful when an operator must control the exact order, payload, retry behavior, error branch, credential boundary, and deployment environment.

Integration counts do not prove that a specific action works. Gumloop currently documents 150+ connectors and can add tools through MCP; n8n's directory is much larger. Neither number tells you whether a connector supports the exact trigger, object, write action, pagination behavior, or OAuth scope your process needs.

Keep deterministic and agentic work in the right lanes

Use a deterministic workflow when the required path is known and an unexpected decision would be dangerous. Good examples include syncing approved invoice fields, copying a signed contract, updating inventory, reconciling IDs, issuing alerts, or moving records through a fixed approval chain.

Use an agent when the inputs vary and judgment adds value: classifying messy requests, researching an account, drafting a response, extracting meaning from documents, selecting a tool from context, or producing a decision memo. Put explicit limits around money movement, deletion, customer communication, permissions, and regulated data.

A practical boundary is: agents propose; deterministic workflows validate and commit. Require a person or a rules-based service to approve high-impact writes. Preserve the original input, agent output, selected tools, final action, and reviewer identity so failures can be reconstructed.

Managed cloud versus self-hosting total cost

Gumloop Pro is a managed service. That removes server patching, queue design, worker scaling, backups, and most platform monitoring from the buyer's workload, but it also means less infrastructure control and no free Community Edition to run on your own server. Enterprise customers can negotiate deployment, security, data, and governance requirements; confirm the exact architecture in the contract.

n8n Cloud similarly removes platform operations. Community Edition lets a company self-host the core product for no software fee, but “free” does not mean zero cost. Budget hosting, database and object storage, TLS, upgrades, secrets, logs, backups, disaster recovery, worker scaling, security review, model APIs, and on-call ownership. Registered Community Edition adds useful free features, but environments, SSO, external secrets, log streaming, multi-main scaling, project sharing, and Git-backed source control are paid capabilities.

For a simple planning model, price self-hosting as infrastructure plus labor plus expected incident cost. If a technical owner costs $75 per hour and spends two to six hours monthly on maintenance, that is $150–$450 per month before hosting or failures. This is an editorial example, not a vendor quote. Self-hosting becomes attractive when control, data location, customization, or sufficient scale is worth that responsibility—not merely because the license says free.

Governance, maintenance, and human-review costs

Gumloop Enterprise documents controls including custom roles, model restrictions, user caps, per-chat credit warnings and action requests, audit logs, organization insights, data export, evaluation permissions, and app or node allow/deny rules. Pro has the lower entry cost, BYOK, team features, and the pooled organization balance, but buyers needing formal governance should verify which controls require Enterprise.

n8n Business adds SSO/SAML/LDAP, separate environments, Git version control, admin roles, and longer insights. Enterprise adds external secret stores, log streaming, extended retention, more projects, higher concurrency, and a support SLA. Community Edition provides technical freedom without those paid governance features.

Whichever product you choose, budget for workflow ownership. Someone must review failures, connector changes, expired credentials, model behavior, prompt changes, schema drift, and vendor updates. Agentic work also creates a review tax: a five-minute human check across 500 monthly cases is more than 41 hours. Automate low-risk acceptance criteria and sample routine outputs, but keep full review where the cost of a bad action is high.

Run this connector and action proof of concept

Do not buy based on a logo wall. Test one high-value workflow in both products with the same inputs.

  • Confirm the exact trigger, read actions, write actions, object types, OAuth scopes, pagination, rate limits, and attachment sizes.
  • Use 20–50 representative records, including missing fields, duplicates, long text, malformed files, and revoked credentials.
  • Record setup time, successful completion rate, median and worst-case runtime, retries, duplicate writes, and manual interventions.
  • For Gumloop, record credits by component and credits per business outcome, not just per successful demo.
  • For n8n, record executions, sub-workflows, retries, AI Assistant usage, external model spend, and infrastructure load if self-hosted.
  • Force failures. Verify alerts, logs, resumability, idempotency, rollback, approval gates, and audit evidence.
  • Test concurrency at realistic peaks rather than assuming the monthly allowance guarantees throughput.
  • Recheck data retention, subprocessors, regional hosting, access controls, and contract terms with the vendor.

Moving from Gumloop to n8n usually means converting agent instructions and tool selection into explicit nodes, prompts, schemas, credentials, and error branches. The result may be more predictable, but it requires an owner. Moving from n8n to Gumloop can simplify judgment-heavy workflows, but fixed transformations and complex custom nodes may still belong in n8n.

Avoid a big-bang migration. Inventory triggers, credentials, data stores, prompts, custom code, human approvals, SLAs, and downstream writes. Run old and new flows in shadow mode. Compare outputs without allowing both systems to write. Then move one low-risk workflow, maintain a rollback window, and retire the old path only after logs and business outcomes agree.

Coexistence is often cleaner than migration. Let n8n receive events, validate schemas, call internal APIs, and commit approved changes. Let Gumloop research, classify, draft, and produce structured artifacts. Connect them through authenticated webhooks or APIs with narrow scopes, request IDs, timeouts, and idempotency keys.

Which buyer should choose which platform?

  • Nontechnical owner or operations team: Gumloop, especially when the primary work is research, triage, drafting, document handling, or Slack-based assistance.
  • Developer or technical automation owner: n8n, especially for APIs, code, custom nodes, precise branching, and deployment control.
